Kim Kardashian is baring it all about her past relationship with ex-husband Kanye West, opening up about what she now describes as a “toxic” marriage filled with emotional turmoil and unpredictable behavior.
The 44-year-old SKIMS creator guested on the Oct. 15 episode of Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, discussing frankly the collapse of her marriage to the rapper as well as her path toward emotional understanding and self-preservation post-breakup.
Kim Looks Back on a ‘Toxic’ Episode
“I do have a problem of only remembering the good,” Kim confessed when speaking of her love life. “I’m a really forgiving person, but I really haven’t dated like that to have those kinds of toxic relationships since I’ve been divorced.”
She continued that maturity has provided her with healthier insights about relationships. “When you get older, you just don’t tolerate that s—. You don’t have time,” she explained.
Kim divorced Kanye in early 2021 and finalized the divorce in November 2022, putting an end to their eight-year marriage starting with their lavish wedding in May 2014. Since then, she has had only one well-known romance with comedian Pete Davidson between October 2021 and August 2022.
On Kanye’s Mental Health and Unstable Behavior
Kim has opened up that Kanye’s actions negatively affected her mental health, especially when he suffered from “episodes” associated with his bipolar disorder.
“People can say that there were warning signs, and perhaps I wasn’t listening to them,” Kim said. “When someone’s having their first mental breakdown, you want to be really supportive… but when they won’t make changes, it makes it very difficult to stick in a relationship that can be poisonous.”
She talked about times that she was not safe, not physically, but emotionally and financially. “I’d come home, and we had like five Lamborghinis, and I’d come home and they’d all be gone if he was in an episode. I’d be like, ‘Where’s all our cars?’ and it would be like, oh, he gave them away to his friends.”
Putting Her Kids and Mental Health First
The reality TV star made sure to highlight that she had left for the welfare of her children, North, 12, Saint, 9, Chicago, 7, and Psalm, 6.
“Once my own mental health begins to get impacted and I’m not able to parent the way that I need to, then there’s gotta be one of us that can,” Kim revealed. “I had to rescue myself in order to be a better mother. I think when everybody’s older, they’ll get it.”
Despite everything, Kim said she doesn’t view the marriage as a failure: “An over-a-decade relationship with four beautiful children is not a failure.”
Life After Divorce and Moving Forward
Kim shared that her daughter North now encourages her to find love again. “She just said to me the other day, ‘Mom, you’ve got to get remarried. You’re getting too old and no one is gonna deal with this,’” Kim laughed.
While her love life is still up in the air, Kim’s work life is more hectic than ever. She’s preparing for The Kardashians season 7 premiere on October 23 on Hulu and the launch of her new legal drama All’s Fair on November 4, featuring Naomi Watts, Glenn Close, Niecy Nash-Betts, Sarah Paulson, and Teyana Taylor.
In a teaser for The Kardashians season 7, Kim is heard sobbing over a chilling revelation that “someone very close” allegedly arranged for her to be hit. She referred to the season as “a whole different beast,” with emotional intensity balanced with flashes of family love and humor.
