‘Wicked: For Good’ Bombshell: Oscar Nominee Colman Domingo Joins Cast as the Cowardly Lion

The announcement was made through the official social media accounts of Wicked, where a playful video showed Domingo surrounded by lion plushies, ending with his cheeky line, “See you in Oz.” Fans instantly flooded the comments with excitement and praise for the actor’s latest role.

This casting confirmation follows weeks of speculation after director Jon M. Chu teased in a Deadline interview that a “major star” would be voicing the Cowardly Lion. Chu shared that he personally reached out to Domingo via Instagram to invite him onto the project.

“I was like, ‘It’s not a ton of lines, but maybe you have a little time,’” Chu recalled. “‘I know you’re busy. I’ll come to you.’ And he was like, ‘Why not, let’s go!’” The director hinted that Domingo’s reveal would be a “wild” moment on the red carpet, suggesting fans might not have known until the film’s premiere.

Wicked: For Good will serve as the second half of the Wicked story, connecting its events directly to The Wizard of Oz. This chapter will finally bring classic characters like Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow into the spotlight after their brief appearance in the first film’s opening sequence.

One question still lingers, though – who will play Dorothy? No official casting has been confirmed yet. A preview from Empire magazine in September hinted that Dorothy will mostly appear from afar or behind, allowing audiences to “keep the Dorothy they know,” as explained by star Cynthia Erivo.

Meanwhile, Domingo continues his busy streak in Hollywood. Following his second Oscar nomination for Sing Sing, he’s set to star alongside Glen Powell in The Running Man. His upcoming lineup also includes the Michael Jackson biopic and Steven Spielberg’s next untitled feature. Additionally, fans can expect his return in the third season of HBO’s Euphoria.

With Wicked: For Good hitting theaters on November 21, anticipation is at an all-time high. Between powerhouse performances from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Jon M. Chu’s visionary direction, and now the addition of Colman Domingo’s iconic voice, the magical world of Oz is about to get even more unforgettable.
