Prison Break is officially reviving itself, eight years since viewers last saw the escape artists in action.
Hulu has ordered a reboot of the popular FOX series, reimagining the cult classic drama that wowed audiences in the 2000s.
The new series will have an entirely new cast of characters and storylines yet will exist within the Prison Break world. Deadline reports that the project is helmed by director Elgin James and will be independent of the initial series, so fans shouldn’t anticipate any returning players or regulars from past seasons.
The cast for the reboot features Lukas Gage, Emily Browning, Drake Rodger, Georgie Flores, JR Bourne, Myles Bullock, and Clayton Cardenas. Among them, Browning stars as Cassidy, a former soldier-turned-corrections officer who gets a job at one of America’s most violent prisons to show just how far she will do whatever is necessary for the people that she loves.
The first Prison Break, which was on from 2005 to 2009 before coming back for a revival in 2017, featured Wentworth Miller as engineer Michael Scofield and Dominic Purcell as his sibling, Lincoln Burrows. The intense show was about Scofield getting himself incarcerated on purpose to assist Lincoln in escaping death row after he was wrongly convicted. The show was soon one of the definitive dramas of the era, as it combined high-stakes tension, complex plotting, and intense brotherly loyalty.
But hope springs eternal for fans waiting for the return of Michael Scofield or Lincoln Burrows. Wentworth Miller, who revealed he was gay in 2013, announced publicly in 2020 that he would not return for any future episodes of Prison Break. “I’m out. Of PB. Officially,” Miller tweeted. “Not because of static on social media… I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told.”
He went on, “If you were a viewer of the show, looking for more seasons. I get that this is disappointing. Sorry. If you’re hot and bothered because you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by an actual gay one. That’s your work.
Miller’s former co-star Dominic Purcell made his complete support of the actor’s action at the time clear, stating, “It was fun, mate. What a ride it was. Fully support and understand your reasoning. Glad you made this decision for your health and your truth. Love ya, brother.
The new Prison Break reboot introduces a new chapter for the franchise, whose loyal fanbase has held out for almost twenty years. Although it will have a completely new narrative and characters, the series promises to deliver the same intensity, suspense, and emotional tension that made the original a phenomenon.
No premiere date has been revealed from Hulu yet, but the show is already generating buzz among long-time fans and new ones alike. With Elgin James at the helm of creative vision and a new cast ensemble poised to reboot the Prison Break legacy, the remake guarantees a contemporary spin on the original tale of desperation, redemption, and freedom.
