Get ready for a price hike, gamers, as your next PlayStation 5 may just be more expensive.
Sony has just issued a serious warning that it may be forced to raise the retail price of the PlayStation 5 in the U.S. because of the latest round of tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump. The Japanese giant is now racing against time to absorb an estimated ¥100 billion-around $512 million USD-additional costs brought on by these new trade regulations, according to its Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao.
Tariffs Could Hit Your Wallet, Not Just Sony’s
On a recent earnings call, Tao spoke to the looming financial hit: “In terms of the tariffs, we are not just simply calculating the simple tariffs to come up with 100 billion Yen,” said Tao. “We may pass the price to customers and also shipment allocation.”
Translation? That $499 PS5 you had your eye on could soon creep higher-out of reach for many American gamers.
This effect will not stay restricted to consoles alone, though: if Sony goes with the price increase, that could extend to controllers, bundles, and special edition hardware, too, depending on how the company rebalances production and distribution to accommodate these higher costs.
Made in the USA? Still Not That Simple
The question is, some might say, why not make the PlayStation 5 in the United States and avoid the tariffs all together?
Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki addressed that, too, and it’s not that easy: “These hardwares can of course be produced locally. but the PlayStation 5 is being manufactured in many areas,” Totoki explained. Even if final assembly happens stateside, the components themselves-from chipsets to cooling systems-are sourced from all over the globe, including countries impacted by the tariffs.
So, even a U.S.-made PS5 wouldn’t totally evade cost rises.
Why It Matters Now
Timing is everything with this announcement. Sony needs to get out in front of this story-before the holiday season just a few months away-and prep consumers for some sticker shock.
This raises questions about whether other tech giants, including Microsoft and Nintendo, may also go in the same direction. The companies depend on global supply chains that could be influenced by new trade policies-especially if tariffs are ever to go past their current targets.
Gamers React
Reactions ranged from frustration to resignation, lighting up online forums and social media platforms. “This better not be another PS3 situation. I’m not paying $600 again,” one Reddit user wrote, referencing the infamously expensive PlayStation 3 launch price.
Another chimed in, “Guess I’ll be playing my PS4 for another year.” If this price bump indeed does come, expect retail bundles to be more common as Sony tries to soften the blow. Think: extra controllers, digital game codes, and longer warranties included in a bundle with the base console to justify higher pricing.
Bottom Line: Should You Buy Now?
If you’ve been thinking about picking up a PS5, now might be the time-particularly if you’re in the U.S. Once Sony officially readjusts pricing, supply might shrink and discounts vanish.
There’s still no official date on the potential price hike, but the writing’s on the wall: tariffs are here, costs are on the rise, and Sony’s not shy about saying you may have to pay for it.
