If you were hoping for more content in Mortal Kombat 1, it’s time to manage your expectations.
NetherRealm Studios officially announced today that the 2023 fighting game won’t be getting any additional DLC characters or story chapters going forward.
In a post shared on X, NetherRealm addressed the community directly: “We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.”
That means the game is essentially feature-complete, other than perhaps minor gameplay patches or balancing tweaks. It’s a disappointment for fans who might have been expecting future content drops or expanded storylines, but NetherRealm’s already shifting gears to its next title.
The studio explained, “We understand this will be disappointing to fans, but our team at NetherRealm must now turn its attention to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.”
Since it launched, Mortal Kombat 1 has gotten some solid crossover content. Characters from DC’s Peacemaker and Prime Video’s The Boys were made available within the title, fleshing the roster out and keeping things somewhat fresh. But with today’s announcement, it’s obvious what’s available now is all players are going to get in terms of major new content.
So, what’s next for NetherRealm? While nothing official has been announced, rumors are heating up about the possibility of Injustice 3. With Warner Bros.’ platform brawler, MultiVersus, shutting down, many speculate that NetherRealm is refocusing on the universe of Injustice.
Dataminer MultiverSusie said, in jest, “‘MultiVersus’ shutting down is an injustice, then doing it all again is another. Leaving me without any leaks is yet again another injustice.” And the punchline? Just the number “3” – pretty clear tease, if you read between the lines.
For the moment, Mortal Kombat 1 players will receive continued technical support but no new characters, stages, or storylines. It’s a clean wrap for the post-launch phase of the game. Whether Injustice 3 is truly on the horizon remains to be seen, but fans of NetherRealm’s style of gritty, cinematic fighters will do well to pay close attention to what comes next.
One thing’s for sure: the chapter has closed on Mortal Kombat 1 DLC, and the studio is going full steam ahead.
