Broadcasting legend Bryant Gumbel was hospitalized in New York City after what officials have termed a “medical emergency.”

The 77-year-old former Today show host was reportedly wheeled from his Manhattan apartment building to a local hospital late Monday evening, where he is being treated.

Emergency personnel, as per individuals directly familiar with the circumstances, arrived at the home of Gumbel around 9 PM. He was reportedly removed from the house on a gurney before being taken to hospital. To date, as of Tuesday afternoon, he remains under treatment, the precise details of which have yet to be made public.

Although information is scarce, TMZ has reported that Gumbel’s family has affirmed he is “okay.” Nevertheless, they declined to say what the cause or extent of his medical problem was. Gumbel representatives have not made an official comment about his health yet.

Bryant Gumbel has been a career man for more than half a century, and he is among television’s longest-standing and most highly regarded journalists and broadcasters. He is most famous for his 15 years as cohost with Jane Pauley and then Katie Couric on NBC’s Today show, where he played an integral role in defining morning television during the 1980s and 1990s. Gumbel’s thoughtful and calm on-camera presence made him a household name for decades.

Outside of his work at NBC, Gumbel left a significant impact on sports reporting as the host of HBO’s highly acclaimed and long-running program “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.” The award-winning investigative sports show garnered several Peabody and Emmy Awards, demonstrating Gumbel’s dedication to sharing influential, thought-provoking stories beyond the game.

Colleagues and fans have filled social media with messages of concern and solidarity for the veteran journalist. Most in the industry view Gumbel as a trailblazer who changed morning TV and sports broadcasting forever with his professionalism and integrity.

This latest health scare follows just one year after the death of his older brother, Greg Gumbel, another well-known broadcaster who worked exclusively in sports. Greg died in 2024 at age 78, and Bryant’s unexpected hospitalization has once again put the spotlight on the family.

Up to now, there has been no word on when Gumbel can be discharged from the hospital, and his representatives have not answered any subsequent queries. Nonetheless, information from close relatives gives an optimistic outlook that he is recovering.

Fans are waiting anxiously for an update from his staff on his condition and recovery process. With a career that has spanned news, sports, and feature storytelling, Gumbel is still one of television’s most popular and well-respected personalities.

Well-wishers for the moment continue to send prayers of encouragement to the broadcasting legend and hope for a speedy and full recovery.
