Elden Ring: Nightreign is already making waves just days after its release, and FromSoftware is wasting no time expanding its multiplayer options, by adding a two-player mode.
The game, which launched on May 30, 2025, was built around three-player co-op, with teams battling terrifying Nightlords in a dark fantasy world. But now, due to strong community feedback, a new feature is officially in the works: a dedicated two-player mode.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the studio announced: “We will continue to provide post-launch support, including DLC scheduled for later this year, as well as adding a two-player mode.” This came alongside the impressive milestone that Elden Ring: Nightreign had already reached 3.5 million players within its first week.
Director Junya Ishizaki also weighed in on the news in an interview with IGN. When asked why a two-player mode wasn’t available at launch, Ishizaki admitted it was “something that was overlooked during development.” He added, “The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we’re very sorry about that.”
The original vision for Nightreign was centered on a three-player experience, and the game’s systems, combat pacing, enemy scaling, even loot distribution, were designed with that in mind. “We set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it’s at the core of Nightreign,” Ishizaki said.
Interestingly, while duos weren’t prioritized, solo play was. Ishizaki explained that a single-player mode was always part of the plan. “We did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed,” he said. “So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect.”
The two-player mode will be rolled out as part of the game’s post-launch support, though no specific release date has been mentioned yet. It’s expected to arrive before the DLC planned for later in the year.
For fans who want a tighter, more intimate co-op experience, or just don’t have a third player regularly available, this update is a welcome change. And for FromSoftware, it’s a chance to keep momentum going after a strong launch and build on what’s already shaping up to be another fantasy epic.
Whether you’re slaying Nightlords solo, as a pair, or with a full squad, Elden Ring: Nightreign looks like it’s only getting better with time.
