Is Grey’s Anatomy Ever Going to End? Shonda Rhimes Weighs In

After 20 years, Shonda Rhimes is still very much not pulling the plug on Grey’s Anatomy. In fact, the queen of the medical melodrama empire has absolutely “zero” ideas for how the show should end. Zilch. Nada. Not even a whisper of a dramatic plane crash, ferry boat disaster, or another ghost sex scene.

She straight-up said it: “I have zero endings for ‘Grey’s’ now. I mean, literally zero.” And honestly? That checks out. Because when your show has survived two decades, 400+ episodes, more heartbreak than a Taylor Swift album, and has outlived half its original cast — what kind of finale do you even write?

Shonda admits she used to have ideas for how it would all end. Back in Season 8, she had possible finales lined up like backup wedding dresses. But Grey’s just wouldn’t die. So she just started tossing those “maybe this is the end” moments into regular episodes. Meredith almost dying? Classic Tuesday. Bomb in a body cavity? Sure, throw it in Season 2.

She’s not even the showrunner anymore. That job belongs to Meg Marinis, who Shonda says might be the one to eventually land the plane — if it ever lands. “Meg just pitched me the finale of this season,” Shonda said. “It’s such a good one. I was so proud of her.” Which, coming from Shonda, is basically the TV equivalent of a mic drop.

Still, she hasn’t totally ruled out writing the final episode… if there ever is one. “I might want to write the series finale. I might not. It might be that, by that point, Meg has really earned the right to end the show.” Translation: catch me chilling until further notice.

And if you’re wondering how she feels about being the face of everything that happens on Grey’s, good or bad — she’s cool with it. “I feel like I get all the credit — good and bad,” she said. “Nobody says, ‘I didn’t like that script by Raamla Mohamed.’ They always say, ‘Shonda Rhimes really f***** up.’”

But she’s not salty. She knows the price of being the brand. “That’s okay with me. That’s sort of the price I pay for getting to do this the way we get to do it — which is without a lot of interference.”

So, no, Grey’s Anatomy isn’t ending anytime soon. And if you thought there was some 10-season master plan stashed away in a safe under Shondaland HQ… think again. Turns out, it’s all vibes and stethoscopes from here on out.
