Rod Wave Fires Back With Countersuit in $27M Tour Dispute, Claims Promoter Tried to Enforce “Indentured Servitude”

Rod Wave has fired back in court over the fallout from his canceled Last Lap tour, filing a countersuit against promoter Grizzly Touring and accusing the company of trying to force him into what his lawyers called “indentured servitude.”

The lawsuit marks Rod Wave’s first official response since Grizzly – a joint venture between AG Entertainment, Mammoth Touring, and CTS Eventim – sued him last month. The promoter alleged that the rapper-singer must return $27 million in advances from the unfinished Last Lap tour and that he remains under contract for future tours with the company.

In his counterclaims, filed Sunday (Oct. 12), Rod argued that Grizzly’s mishandling of production and scheduling made it “logistically impossible” to complete the tour. He’s now asking a judge to void his contract with the company so he can move forward with his self-promoted Redemption Experience tour.

“Grizzly is not entitled to this improperly requested specific performance or equivalent injunctive relief, which effectively amounts to an indentured servitude,” wrote Rod’s attorney, James Sammataro. “Defendants have lost confidence in Grizzly as their tour promoter and no longer wish to perform services for Grizzly or receive Grizzly’s services.”

The dispute stems from Rod’s arena tour supporting his Last Lap album, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in October 2024. Originally slated to run from October to December 2024, the tour faced repeated postponements extending into February 2025. By January, Rod announced on social media that the remaining shows were officially canceled.

Grizzly’s lawsuit accuses Rod of violating their touring contract by walking away and keeping $27 million in advances. But in his countersuit, Rod argues that the money was rightfully his under the deal – and that it was Grizzly who breached the agreement by mismanaging production.

According to court filings, the company allegedly failed to load equipment properly, made “unilateral, onerous and inexplicable routing and booking decisions,” and repeatedly shifted show dates without informing Rod’s team.

“Rod Wave frequently learned only at the last minute that a show had been rescheduled, often only after seeing tickets for these rescheduled shows available online,” the filing states. “Only 12 of the 35 scheduled [shows] occurred at the date and venue originally announced.”

Rod claims that because of these ongoing issues, he had “no option but to cancel the remaining tour dates.” His legal team is also seeking financial damages from Grizzly for breach of contract and for the reputational harm caused by the cancellations, which left many fans frustrated.

The countersuit goes further, alleging that Grizzly’s agreement is void due to misconduct by one of its member companies, AG Entertainment. Rod claims that AG secretly paid his former agent, Beau Williams, at least $1.8 million in “under-the-table” bribes to insert an exclusive five-tour clause into his contract. According to Rod’s legal team, the scheme failed after he discovered and rejected the hidden clause.

In a statement released Monday (Oct. 13), Rod’s representatives blasted Grizzly’s “baseless” lawsuit, calling it “an unfortunate extension of its prior failed attempts to trap Rod Wave into an exclusive arrangement.”

“Grizzly Touring has no one to blame but itself,” the statement read. “Had it not grossly mismanaged the Last Lap tour – repeatedly changing schedules and canceling concerts at the last minute – the tour would have been completed as intended.”

Grizzly’s lawyers and Williams have not yet commented on the matter. Meanwhile, Rod is gearing up to launch The Redemption Experience tour in December, starting at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena – without Grizzly’s involvement.
