EA Confirms Three Marvel Games Still In Development After Black Panther Cancellation

Electronic Arts has confirmed it is still working on at least three Marvel games, despite having recently axed its Black Panther title and shut down the studio behind it, Cliffhanger Games.

The publisher made the announcement shortly after revealing a wave of layoffs and refocusing efforts on its core franchises.

On May 28, 2025, EA pulled the plug on the Black Panther project, still in early development at Cliffhanger Games. This studio, formed in 2023 specifically to develop this Marvel title, was closed as part of some internal restructuring at EA. The company said it wanted to shift resources to established IPs like Battlefield, The Sims, Apex Legends, and Skate.

Even so, EA has made it clear that it’s not walking away from Marvel. In a statement to IGN, Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, said, “Our partnership with Marvel remains strong and our multi-title, long-term collaboration continues.” Without going into details about the other games in the pipeline, she emphasized that the relationship with Marvel Games would continue.

A Marvel spokesperson provided additional context, confirming that development on the Iron Man game remains on track. That game, first announced earlier this year and led by Motive Studios, is the first of the EA-Marvel games announced to the public. According to Marvel, “The multi-title, long-term relationship between Marvel Games and EA, a creative collaboration focused on original storytelling with various, beloved Marvel characters, remains strong. Development of our console and PC titles, beginning with Marvel’s Iron Man, is led by Motive Studios.”

That puts to rest speculation that the publisher might be stepping away from its Marvel deal altogether. The cancellation of Black Panther was a big surprise in its own right, considering how big the character is to the global Marvel brand. But EA appears to be streamlining its efforts, betting on games with clearer commercial potential or smoother development timelines.

In an internal email obtained by IGN, Miele explained that the decision to cancel the Black Panther game wasn’t taken lightly, but it was necessary to “sharpen EA’s focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” That means existing franchises and potentially more profitable, proven concepts take priority.

While it’s a shame for fans who might have been anticipating a more focused Black Panther game, at least the Iron Man project is still going ahead, along with two other unmentioned Marvel titles, indicating that EA still holds value in its partnership with Marvel.

More information about these upcoming titles will hopefully arrive later this year during some major gaming showcases or even EA’s events. For now, gamers can look forward to EA’s take on Iron Man and remain hopeful about what other Marvel heroes might be next in line for the spotlight.
