IO Interactive Unveils ‘007 First Light’: A New James Bond Game Origin Story

IO Interactive has finally pulled back the curtain on its long-awaited James Bond project, officially titled ‘007 First Light’.

First announced back in 2020 under the codename ‘Project 007’, the studio has now confirmed the game’s full reveal is coming on June 6 at 6pm PDT, during their very own showcase.

A teaser image for ‘007 First Light’ has been released alongside the announcement. The official account posted on X (formerly Twitter): “#EarnTheNumber in 007 First Light, a new game by @iointeractivee. Mission brief is headed your way soon. Stay tuned for more information.” That cryptic tease has fans of both James Bond and IO’s previous work on high alert.

Best known for its acclaimed Hitman series, IO Interactive has been quietly building this new Bond experience for several years. What makes ‘007 First Light’ especially interesting is its focus: this won’t be a rehash of past films or familiar Bond adventures. According to IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abraham, the game is completely original, a brand-new origin story that explores how Bond became 007.

In an interview with IGN, Abraham shared: “What’s exciting about ‘007 First Light’ is that we actually got to do an original story. So it’s not a gamification of a movie. It’s a completely new beginning and becoming a story, hopefully for a big trilogy out there in the future.” That clearly hints at a multi-game arc, giving IO a lot of room to shape their own version of Bond’s universe.

The upcoming June 6 showcase won’t just spotlight Bond, though. IO Interactive also teased new details on ‘Hitman’ content, and an update on their other major title, ‘MindsEye’, an action-adventure game that’s still under wraps. The event will include trailers, gameplay demos, announcements, and even a live Q&A, offering fans a rare peek behind the curtain.

The showcase will stream live on Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok, giving players everywhere a chance to see what IO’s been working on. With interest running high and the studio promising “additional surprises,” expectations are rising.

For Bond fans, this is a long time coming. Since its initial reveal as ‘Project 007’, details have been scarce, and the silence had many wondering when (or if) we’d hear more. Now, ‘007 First Light’ is no longer just a name, it’s shaping up to be a full-fledged game with a unique narrative vision, separate from the Daniel Craig or classic Bond timelines.

If IO Interactive can bring the same level of craftsmanship and stealth-action mastery from the Hitman series into the world of Bond, ‘007 First Light’ could easily become one of the most compelling spy games in years.

The mission briefing is almost here. Eyes on June 6.
