Dallas area motorists hitting the road today have freezing temperatures, snow flurries, and some slick spots on the roads – especially on bridges and overpasses – to contend with.
Most major roads were clear this morning, despite the cold, but conditions can change quickly. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe and avoid delays.
Current Conditions of Roadways
North Texas woke up to temperatures in the teens, with wind chills across the area making it feel even colder. Several areas reported snow flurries, including Cockrell Hill in Dallas County and Grapevine, but the snowfall was too light to stick on most roadways.
But motorists should still be cautious, particularly on those elevated surfaces, such as bridges and overpasses that can freeze more easily. Weatherford cameras showed light snow along Farm Road 3325 near Morning Mist, and some roads on the western side of North Texas had snow along the edges.
Precautions taken by TxDOT
As a precaution, TxDOT has shut down all the TEXpress managed toll lanes across Dallas -Fort Worth until further notice. Though this week’s winter weather isn’t expected to bring any heavy ice, freezing temperatures are expected to last through at least noon Thursday, with highs only reaching the mid-30s.
What to expect over the next few days
- Wednesday: Another cold day with snow flurries for parts of the area. For the most part, roads are clear. Slick bridges and overpasses can be expected.
- Thursday: Winds die down but temperatures stay in the 30s. A few roads may get slick in the morning due to moisture that freezes overnight.
- Friday and Beyond: Temps will rise above freezing Friday afternoon. Look for much warmer weather this weekend and into next week.
Driving in Cold and Snowy Conditions
- Go slower and leave extra time for your destination if the road conditions are icy.
- Watch out for bridges, overpasses and shaded areas; they are the first to freeze.
- Turn on your headlights and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Sudden braking and sharp turns may cause the driver to lose control on slippery roads.
- Check the tires, battery, and antifreeze of your car before driving in cold weather.
Road Condition Updates
Check the WFAA website for updates on road conditions and closures. Follow TxDOT’s traffic cameras and alerts. You may want to consider delaying your trip if you will be traveling long distances until the weather gets better.
Although most roads are reported clear in Dallas, despite the flurries and freezing temperatures, drivers should still be aware of potential dangers-especially on elevated surfaces.
And since the cold will be with us at least through Thursday, stay informed, drive with care, and leave plenty of extra time for your morning commute.
