It looks like the long-running series of Final Fantasy VII remakes may finally hit a Nintendo console.
According to director Naoki Hamaguchi, the Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is in development for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, paving the way for the full remake trilogy to also make its way across. Since the dawn of the remake journey back in 2020, fans had hoped for this crossover, but it’s looking more possible than ever.

In Nintendo’s Creator’s Voices video series, Hamaguchi expressed his excitement for bringing the Final Fantasy VII remake series onto a portable platform like the Switch 2. “I’m very excited to see this game playable on a portable system,” he said, hinting that Square Enix and Nintendo could be building a strong long-term partnership around the Final Fantasy brand.
The biggest reveal, though, was Hamaguchi confirming that the Switch 2 would be powerful enough to support the technically demanding Final Fantasy VII remake series. That’s a huge green light for fans who’ve been worried Nintendo’s next-gen console would be unable to handle high-end titles created first for the PlayStation 5. If Intergrade runs smoothly, it’s pretty likely the rest of the trilogy will follow suit.
For Hamaguchi, this project is deeply personal. He shared that the original Final Fantasy VII is what inspired him to pursue a career in the gaming industry. Now, working on its remake and potentially bringing it to Nintendo’s new platform feels like a full-circle moment. “The fact that it happens to be the Final Fantasy VII remake series, considering the original game gave me the opportunity to pursue a career in the games industry, makes me feel like it was fate,” he said.

He also got a little emotional, saying how much it would mean to him to see two generations-those who grew up with the original and today’s younger players-bond over Cloud, Tifa, and the rest of the crew on the Switch 2. “I think it would make me incredibly happy if two generations connected and shared a bond over the characters,” he said.
While there’s no official release date, one thing’s certain: Square Enix is getting serious about the Switch 2. If you’ve been holding off on buying a PlayStation just to play the Final Fantasy VII remake series, that wait might finally be worth it. All signs point to an epic journey coming soon to Nintendo’s next big thing.
