IRS Refund After Tax Deadline? Here’s How to Still Get Your Money

So, it’s April 15, the tax deadline, and you’re nowhere near ready to file your taxes-deep breath-you haven’t missed your chance to get that refund. Not even close.

The truth is, even if you can’t file by the deadline, you may still be owed money, and the IRS will still send it to you when you file. But there are a few things you need to know to make sure you get every dollar you’re owed.

Let’s break it down.

First of all: There’s no penalty if you’re getting a refund

Yes, really. If the IRS owes you money and you don’t file on time, you won’t be hit with penalties or interest.

The IRS only assesses penalties for:

  • Filing late when you owe taxes
  • Late payment of what you owe

If you’re owed a refund? You’re in the clear.

But here’s the catch: You still have to file within three years in order to claim your money. Miss that window, and your refund becomes government property.

Can I still file an extension and get a refund?

Yep. If you’re not ready today, file IRS Form 4868 by midnight. That gives you until October 15, 2025 to submit your return.

When you do, provided the numbers check out, your refund hits just like it would if you filed in April.

What to Know About IRS Refund Timelines

Once you do file:

  • E-filing with direct deposit? You’ll usually get your refund in about 21 days.
  • Filing by paper or requesting a check? Expect delays, up to 6 weeks or more.

Pro tip: Check “Where’s My Refund?” on the IRS website to track your money once your return is submitted.

How to Maximize Your Refund-Even If You’re Filing Late

Just because you’re filing after the deadline doesn’t mean that you should rush. Take time to check for these:

Missed Credits

  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Saver’s Credit Even if you don’t owe taxes, you may still get cash back from these.

Last-Minute Deductions

  • IRA contributions
  • HSA contributions

If you make these by April 15, you can still write them off for 2024 even if you file later.

Free Filing Tools

Even with an extension, if your income is below $79,000, you can take advantage of IRS Free File software to file at no cost. You missed the April 15 tax deadline and are worried about your IRS refund? That’s no problem, at least as long as the IRS owes you money.

Just get your return in as soon as you can and claim your refund. And while you’re at it, be certain you’re not leaving money on the table.

Credits, deductions, and clean paperwork can make all the difference, whether you file now or in October. Your money is still waiting. Don’t let it go unclaimed.
