In a major security lapse, Kristi Noem, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, has had her purse stolen during dinner at a Washington restaurant on Easter Sunday.
Among those contents, there was reportedly a variety of highly sensitive items, including her department-issued security badge, passport, $3,000 in cash, and several personal belongings.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that an incident occurred this past Monday, and it was informed about the details reported by CNN, which was the first to publish the story. The high-profile items in the bag purportedly included the likes of blank checks, medication, apartment keys, and Ms. Noem’s driver’s license.
The theft came only hours before Noem was set to appear, as scheduled, at the White House Easter Egg Roll Monday morning, where she publicly confirmed the incident.
While theft in public spaces isn’t unheard of, the circumstances surrounding this incident-notably the presence of classified credentials and access materials-have sparked debate about operational security protocols for high-ranking officials. Critics and watchdog groups are already raising questions over how such sensitive materials could be left unattended in a public setting and what measures are now being taken to prevent unauthorized access or misuse.
The Department of Homeland Security has not issued a detailed public statement regarding the internal investigation, but a departmental spokesperson said “appropriate security protocols have been activated” in response to the incident. Law enforcement is now working on tracing the theft and recovering the missing items.
While the investigation is still in its early stages, there are so far no indications of foul play beyond the robbery itself, and officials have not confirmed whether the theft was random or targeted. The addition of a federal security badge and passport in the stolen bag creates the potential for national security implications should those items end up in the wrong hands.
Noem, the former governor of South Dakota and a high-profile political figure, was sworn in this year as Secretary of Homeland Security. Her department covers everything from counterterrorism to border security; any personal security breach of her own is a grave issue.
So far, there have been no arrests, and the investigation continues. Police ask that anyone with information about the incident should contact the Metropolitan Police Department.
This developing story is expected to evolve as more details emerge regarding how the theft occurred, and how it will impact DHS operations moving forward.
