If you filed your taxes on time this year and you’re still waiting for your IRS refund, don’t worry-you’re not alone, and your money could be just around the corner, like this week!
The IRS tax refund schedule for 2025 is in full swing, and if you’re one of those Americans who filed between March 31 and April 6, the IRS says your payment should be landing between April 21 and 27. That includes electronic filings with direct deposit, which usually are the fastest to process.
Who gets their IRS refund this week?
You are likely part of the group that will see payments drop between Monday, April 21 and Saturday, April 27 if you filed online via the official IRS website and opted for direct deposit. Paper filers or those expecting checks in the mail should prepare to wait a bit longer for their refund.
Refund processing timelines (according to the IRS):
- E-filing + Direct Deposit: 1–3 weeks
- E-filing + Mailed Check: About 1 month
- Mail-in Return + Direct Deposit: Approximately 3 weeks
- Mail-in Return + Mailed Check: up to 2 months
What Can Delay Your Refund?
Even if you filed early, several factors could delay your refund:
- Tax credits claimed: Returns that include the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Child
- Tax Credit (CTC) generally take longer to process.
- Filing method: Returns filed by mail take much longer to be processed compared to those filed online.
- Paper checks: Opting for a check instead of direct deposit will always make things slower.
- Errors or flags: Any discrepancies or incomplete information on your return will generate a manual review.
Still waiting? Here’s how to check
You can check your IRS refund status with the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on irs.gov. All you need is:
- Your Social Security number
- Filing status (single, married filing jointly, etc.)
- The exact amount refundable
Special extension for East Coast states
Taxpayers in areas stricken by Hurricane Helene last September received an extension to file until May 1, 2025. If you are in one of those areas, your timeline for your refund might be a little different.
If you filed between March 31 and April 6 and used direct deposit, your refund could come any day now, provided you keep an eye on your bank account or check the tracker on the IRS’ website. For everyone else, patience pays, literally. The IRS is still processing millions of returns, and yours may simply be in line.
Still unsure? You may want to arrange for direct deposit of refunds next year and file earlier to get ahead of the refund rush.
