The Witcher 4 Release Date: Why Fans Might Be Waiting a While

Well, it is official now: CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4 will not arrive sooner than 2027. The fans were both filled with excitement due to the continuation of an iconic RPG franchise and frustrated with such a long wait.

Despite keeping the storyline, cast of characters, and gameplay under lock and key, financial statements made recently by the publisher give some insight into what’s to come.

The Witcher 4: Everything We Currently Know

At first, CD Projekt Red had eliminated the possibility of a direct sequel to The Witcher 3. That changed, it appears, after the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, and The Witcher 4 is now in development, officially confirmed to feature Ciri rather than Geralt as its primary protagonist.

The only confirmed footage so far has been a pre-rendered trailer, and the latest financial report from the company made it clear that it won’t release before December 31, 2026, meaning the very earliest it could launch is 2027.

“We aren’t going to announce the exact date of the launch of the game yet,” Piotr Nielubowicz of CD Projekt Red said. “All we could share now to give more visibility to investors is that it won’t be launched within the time frame of the first target for the incentive program, which ends on December 31, 2026.”

Fans React to The Witcher 4 News

The news has received a mixed reception with its fans, some excited to hear the game is in active development, while others frustrated by the long wait in light of previous studio delays with Cyberpunk 2077.

  • “Take your time CDPR. Perfect it. No Cyberpunk-style launch, please!” – A fan comment on Reddit.
  • “I’ll be 30 by the time this game comes out… That’s wild.” – A Twitter user reacting to the news.
  • “Ciri as the lead? If true, this will be the best thing ever!” – Comment from a fan on YouTube.

Meanwhile, many gamers have also speculated on the new protagonist, believing that Geralt’s story is over and The Witcher 4 will give a new look at the Continent.

The Expanding Universe of CD Projekt Red

Beyond The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red has a number of projects in development right now, including:

  • The Witcher 1 Remake – was expected to launch first, but appears to have now been delayed.
  • Project Sirius – A multiplayer spin-off set within The Witcher universe, currently in an early developmental stage.
  • Project Orion – the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, only just now going into pre-production.
  • Project Hadar – A fully new IP, still shrouded in mystery.

CD Projekt Red also announced a new partnership with Pokémon Go owner Scopely to work on an unnamed title set within one of its existing franchises. No details are available, but it’s believed to be related to either The Witcher or Cyberpunk universes.

What This Means for The Witcher Fans

While it is great to see that CD Projekt Red is committed to expanding The Witcher universe, the long wait for The Witcher 4 means fans will probably have to make do with remakes and spin-offs in the meantime.

Given its possible release window of 2027, delays in development can still occur. But one thing for sure: The Witcher 4 is indeed coming, and this might just set another bar when it does.
