Western United Fish Company is recalling its Kirkland Signature brand Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke that it supplied to Costco due to a suspicion that the green onions used in the product might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recall identifies growing concerns over food safety and the perpetual threat of food-borne illness in ready-to-eat foods distributed through leading retailers. It comes on the heels of a recent Costco tuna recall due to potential botulism hazards, identifying ongoing challenges with policing and safeguarding the food chain.
Listeriosis due to Listeria monocytogenes may take on a range of symptoms, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says. In their mild presentations, the victims may come out with fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle aching lasting one to three days. In severe infections, though, they may present with headache, stiff neck, confusion, convulsions, and dizziness. The infection is particularly dangerous for old adults, infants, immunocompromised individuals, and pregnant women, where it can result in miscarriage or stillbirth.
The recall began on September 20, 2025, by Western United Fish Company of Kent, Washington after a contaminated test result for the green onions in the product. About 3,315 pounds of Kirkland Signature Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke are affected. The goods were packaged and available for sale in Costco deli counters on September 18th, 2025 with a “sell by” date of September 22nd, 2025. The recall includes Costco warehouses in at least 32 states including Alabama, Alaska, California, Florida, New York, Texas, and Washington.
No illnesses related to the product during the recall have been reported so far. Consumers who purchased the tuna poke are advised not to eat it and bring it to their local Costco for a refund of its full value or properly dispose of it.
Consumers are also requested to monitor themselves for signs of listeriosis. Anyone who has consumed the product and experiences fever, gastrointestinal illness, or other symptoms should seek a health care provider’s immediate attention.
